Hi Reader Most people try to fix their anxiety. They view anxiety as a problem to be solved. Something to change and get rid of. Here’s why that never works. Anxiety isn’t a feeling. Anxiety is a spiral. The anxiety spiral tricks us into doing the things that cause it to grow. Here’s how the anxiety spiral worksSomething in your environment feels threatening. A small fear response happens. That seed of fear gets picked up by your left-brain neocortex, which creates scary stories and control strategies (like people-pleasing, excessive planning, “just trying to be in control”). Then the scary stories go back to the fear response, and the fear grows. The formula is: fear + control + catastrophic stories = Anxiety spiral The anxiety spiral creates:
The way out: by leveraging a different spiralThe opposite of an anxiety spiral is a creativity spiral. curiosity + fascination + invention = Creativity spiral And you can’t be in both an anxiety spiral and a creativity spiral at once. As anxiety ramps up, creativity diminishes. That’s the doorway. Not wrestling. Not forcing. Not suppression.
